Charles Johnson transported me back to both my teenage years and his exotic locations as I gulped this good book down in two sittings. Love the surprise ending at the 40th reunion! Like his hero Nick Carter, Charles and I both graduated from Santa Rosa High School, but any reader will re-relive one's first love. Evocative descriptions of Sonoma County and Hawaii. This book was mentioned in a Santa Rosa paper. Since we live a short distance from Santa Rosa, I thought it would be interesting to read. It gives a view of Sonoma County, Hawaii, Africa and Venice. I am so glad that I read this book, it is not only interesting, it is different from anything I have read, and I read lots of books.
I also had a High School sweetheart. sadly, he drifted away from me, but I still have a special place in my heart for him, so I could understand some of the main character's actions.
I give this book 5 stars,as I thorougly enjoyed it.
How good a novel could a guy with a PhD in geology write? When he bases it on the life-long yearnings of his heart and has Charles Johnson's skills, it turns out that he can tell a compelling story that you will find yourself experiencing as your own. Having known C.J. in the late 1950's and residing again within a few blocks of the "fictional" characters certainly colors my appreciation of this book. But the author has written this story of youth and maturity in a rhythm that keeps the book in your hands, regardless of where you grew up. This book is fiction, but structured around all-to-real events. Can't wait for C.J.'s next book!

I'm from the Wine Country area mentioned in the book and it was nice to see so many familiar places mentioned. This story was intriguing from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end and can very much see a continuation. Please Mr. Johnson???
This was an amazing book... and not just because I graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1969, spent time on the Russian River and now live in Hawaii. I don't often weep over a book (movies sometimes), but did find myself sobbing after reading the last few chapters. The plot is very believable because the excellent author (Charles J. Johnson) based his story on real people, incidents and locations. You'll find this book clutching your soul as you unravel the ending. Whatever you do, don't peak at the last chapter!
This book was recommended to me by a friend primarily because the story takes place in the town we grew up in and around the same time. The author recounted places and adventures I could relate to. However, that being said, I believe anyone who was in high school in the early 60's would enjoy the story. The story is bitter sweet and worth reading.
I was referred to the book by a family member who knows the author. I am very eager to dive into this book, following such great reviews. So far this seems to be a very well written and composed book.
I'm generally not a fan of romance fiction, but the depth of the love story in Reunion Promise brought me to make an exception for this haunting, insightful read. What first got me into it was the fact that, like the book's protagonist, I too have been a diamond explorationist in Africa. It was clear that Dr. Johnson is well experienced in this field. And equally clear that the extraordinary story he tells he obviously experienced himself.
When I finished the book -- in a single read at 230 AM -- after sitting a while in stunned thought with tears in my eyes, I remembered the dedication and went back to it, hoping to find a clue to the truth behind the tale. I think it is there -- a final tribute that completes the story.
