When Claudia Thomas graduates from the newly formed Burnham College for Women, Class of 1880, she is not ready to trade the life of the mind for a husband and a house in town. She chooses to further her studies in Europe, buying time before the inevitable descent into maternity and domesticity. Her plans are interrupted when she meets a fellow expatriate one day in a Heidelberg city park.

Jeanette Taynor is a young widow, employed as nanny in the home of a rich businessman. Despite their differences in class and education, their lives intersect and intertwine, blossoming into a love that will not be broken.

The New Women edition by Kathryn Ewers Bundy Literature Fiction eBooks

Claudia Thomas is a modern woman in the 1880s; educated and experiencing life in Europe, while postponing marriage to her fiancé Robert. While in Germany, she befriends Jeanette, the widowed nanny of a wealthy family, a friendship that crosses the boundary of social classes. From this friendship blooms a deeper relationship. When life happens and time passes, this love is never far from their minds.

Kathryn Ewers Bundy has spun a tail that is romantic, painful, enchanting and haunting. The endearing quiet charms of Jeanette and the charismatic individuality of Claudia are the building blocks of this well crafted novel. From the first word to the last, I was captivated by the story of these two women.

The New Women edition by Kathryn Ewers Bundy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It's not often that a wonderfully written love story incorporates involuntary commitment to a mental asylum, postpartum depression, and the encroachment of an overbearing sister in law but, this novel manages to pull together all those elements and then some. From the first page to the last, the reader is rooting for the main characters, Claudia and Jeanette to find happiness together. I was enthralled and enriched by the author's attention to period details. Reading the descriptions of the dresses worn you can almost hear the rustle of the petticoats. I appreciate while this is a love story, The New Women also incorporates details relevant to the times of crusading women writers who exposed the treachery of the industrial age as well as the age old traditions of L.U.G. which still seems to dominate life at women-only colleges. I truly enjoyed this book and looking forward to immersing myself in her other works.
Glad I took the chance in reading this book that tried to capture the hardships endured by women in th late 1800s. It is enlightening to read about some of the ridiculous restrictions placed upon women of the past. And it is with heavy hearts that you realize how far women still have to go to have their bodies realized as their own and not as possessions.
What a great book. Well written and an easy read. I have read many books about lesbian romance in my time but this one is a great find. I am going to keep an eye out for more books written by this author.
I have always admired Ms Bundy's ability to tell stories. I suppose that some would call this lesbian literature, but I think if it is only enjoyed from that perspective then the reader is missing a really important facet of the book. That is and always will be for me, the author's ability to take you inside the story. Do you attend the opera, did you go to the musuem's and did you feel the measure of disappointment of the meeting not had? Those are the things that I look for in a piece of literature, I really do not care if the grammar is correct. Literature is a means of escape of the mind and Ms. Bundy accomplishes this weather it is Lesbian Lit or not. So should you want a short novel that takes you away from your daily existence and takes you to another world and time, then yes this book is for you. Can not wait to read the next one which is downloaded and waiting for me.
I have never written a review before despite taking full advantage of all the reviews posted in helping me choose a book. However, this book deserves high praise as a smart, well researched, character driven and non formulaic novel. I was impressed with the historic detail and engaging story. The story emphasizes the struggle for women to be true to who they are in a time when there was little freedom to do so. The slow realistic story of two women falling in love against all that was accepted moved me. Read this book! You will not be disappointed. I very much look forward to this author's next novel.
I loved this book. I am always searching for lesbian books in historical settings. If you like these books as I do, then you are in for a treat. This love affair crosses continents and a decade with the central characters growing along the way. A merry band of secondary characters make this book even more enjoyable. The expectations for women in that time period is brought to light in this novel making me feel fortunate to live in the times I do. Would read any further books by this author without question.
I love it when I "discover" a new lesbian author who can bring to life two wonderful characters. Not only is this a well written love story but it is a look at how women in America at the end of the 1800's lived and faught to better thier plight. I have read books lately that have a political bent that end up being so preachy that I lose interest in the story being told. This, happily, is not the case here. This is a literate, well told story. Highly recommended.
